Can I edit the Payment by Type report in Shopify?

QUICK ANSWER

A merchant asks how to track orders where a refund is still owed. Shopify only shows this inside each order, not in the orders list, and a failed partial refund gives no notification. Suggested workaround: filter a report by refund status "Partially Refunded" plus order status "Return."

Main Question

Can I edit the Payment by Type report in Shopify?

Official answer

Partly. The Payment by Type report can be filtered, have its columns edited, and be saved as a custom report. What Shopify can't do is combine payment data with unrelated order, product, or fee fields in one report, since those sit in separate datasets.

Shopify's current analytics lets you customize most default reports: apply filters, add or remove columns, change the date range, and add dimensions, then save the modified version. The real constraint isn't editing, it's dataset boundaries. Payment method sits in the payments dataset, while order, product, and sales figures sit in the sales dataset, so Shopify blocks combinations across the two. That's why you can't add per-transaction gateway fees, SKU detail, or customer fields alongside payment type in a single native report, and why fees for third-party gateways like PayPal or Stripe don't fully appear. To pull payment type, order and sales data, and fees into one report, a reporting app such as Report Pundit can combine those fields and add custom fields or metafields Shopify keeps separate.
