What Is the Shopify Sales Attributed to Each Product Tag Report?

This report groups your Shopify sales by the tags assigned to your products. Instead of reading revenue one product at a time, you see how each product tag, such as summer, clearance, giftable, or a campaign label, contributes across orders, gross sales, discounts, returns, and net sales.

The grouping dimension is the product tag itself, not the product, the order, or the customer. That distinction matters. A product tag describes an item, so this report answers a merchandising question: which product groups defined by your own labels are actually selling, and how healthy that revenue is after discounts and returns.

One point to keep in mind before reading the numbers: a product can carry many tags at once, so the same order can be credited to more than one tag row. That is normal for tag-based reporting and shapes how the totals should be read.

Merchants use this report when product type, vendor, or collection does not capture the grouping they care about, and a flexible tag does.

Which Fields Are Included in the Shopify Sales Attributed to Each Product Tag Report?

These fields let you evaluate both the volume and the quality of revenue tied to each tag.

Field What it shows
Product Tag The tag label each row is grouped by. This is the dimension that organizes the report.
Product Tag Attribution The sales value credited to that specific tag, showing how much of the revenue is attributed to products carrying it.
Orders The number of orders that included at least one product with the tag.
Gross Sales Product revenue for the tag before discounts, returns, taxes, and shipping (price multiplied by quantity sold).
Discount The value of discounts applied to products or orders tied to the tag.
Returns The value of items returned from orders containing the tagged products.
Net Sales Gross sales minus discounts minus returns for the tag. This is the cleanest read of real revenue.
Shipping Shipping charges collected on orders that included the tagged products.
Tax Taxes collected on those orders.
Total Sales The final figure for the tag: net sales plus taxes, shipping, and any duties.

You can customize the pre-made report by adding, removing, or reordering columns, and by filtering to the specific tags you want to review.

Important Insights You Can Find in This Report

Which tags produce strong gross sales but weak net sales?

Compare Gross Sales against Net Sales for each tag. A tag with high gross sales but a much lower net figure is leaning heavily on discounts or absorbing returns. A clearance tag behaving this way is expected. A full-price seasonal or campaign tag behaving this way is worth investigating, because the headline revenue is not as profitable as it looks.

Are your best-selling tags concentrated in a few labels?

Sort by Net Sales and look at how much revenue sits in the top handful of tags versus the long tail. Heavy concentration tells you which product groups your store actually depends on, which helps with reorder priority and campaign planning. A flat distribution may mean your tags are too granular to reveal a clear pattern.

Which tags carry high order volume but low value per order?

Read Orders alongside Net Sales for the same tag. A tag driving many orders but modest net sales points to low-priced or entry items, while a tag with fewer orders and strong net sales points to higher-value products. This shapes whether you promote a tag for reach or for margin.

THE ANALYST'S READ: The Signal Most Merchants Miss

Because a single product can hold multiple tags, this report does not split revenue into neat, non-overlapping buckets. A product tagged both summer and clearance contributes its sales to both rows. That means adding up net sales across every tag can come out higher than your store's actual net sales.

This is not an error. It is worth checking, though, because it changes how you compare tags. Look for tags that heavily overlap the same products, and read each tag's performance on its own terms rather than treating the tag list as a share-of-total breakdown. If you need a clean, additive view where each grouping is counted once, that is a different question than this report answers, and the tag-group report is the better fit for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a product with more than one tag appear in more than one row?

Yes. Product tags are not mutually exclusive, so a product carrying several tags contributes its sales to each of those tag rows. This is why the sum of all tag rows can be larger than your store total.

What does the Product Tag Attribution field show?

It shows the sales value credited to a specific tag based on the products carrying it. It is the column that connects a flexible product label to actual revenue, which is what separates this report from simply listing which tags exist.

How is Net Sales calculated in this report?

Net Sales is gross sales minus discounts minus returns for that tag. It excludes taxes and shipping, which makes it the most reliable column for comparing how tags actually perform after markdowns and refunds.

How is this different from the Shopify Sales by Product Tag Group report?

This report attributes sales to each individual product tag, so one product can appear under several tags. The Sales by Product Tag Group report analyzes the full tag combination on a product as a single unit, which gives a cleaner, non-overlapping view. Use this report to judge single tags, and the group report when you want each grouping counted once.

Can I filter the report to specific product tags?

Yes. You can filter to one tag or a set of tags to focus on a campaign, season, or product family, and combine that with a date range to study a specific selling period.
