What this report is
The Inventory Sale Value Report is a Shopify analytics report that calculates the retail-price value of every product and variant currently in stock - Inventory Quantity × Product Price. Why the Inventory Sale Value Report matters

Two stores with the same number of units in stock can be worth wildly different amounts at retail. A merchant with 10,000 units of low-priced accessories sits in a very different financial position than one with 10,000 units of premium outerwear. The Sale Value Report - sometimes called "Inventory at Retail" - answers a question Shopify's native reports don't: "If everything in my warehouse sold today at current prices, how much revenue would I capture?"

That number matters in three places: financial planning (forecasting potential revenue), merchandising (identifying overstocks tying up high-dollar inventory), and pricing (deciding what to promote, discount, or pull from active rotation).

Combined with the Inventory Cost Report, Sale Value also gives you the cleanest view of unrealized margin. The gap between cost and sale value is the gross profit waiting in your warehouse.

Who uses this report - 4 scenarios

01

1. Finance teams forecasting potential revenue

Situation
You're projecting next quarter's revenue ceiling and need to know what's already in stock vs. what needs sourcing.
Look at
Total Inventory Value, broken down by product type or collection.
Decision
Set realistic revenue targets and identify which categories need procurement attention.
02

2. Merchandisers spotting high-value overstocks

Situation
Cash flow feels tight. You suspect capital is trapped in inventory that isn't moving.
Look at
Sort by Inventory Value descending. Cross-reference with Sales Velocity. High value × low velocity = candidate for clearance.
Decision
Launch a targeted promotion, mark down, or move stock to a different sales channel.
03

3. Planners evaluating slow-moving stock

Situation
End-of-season review. Which items didn't sell as planned and are now eating shelf space?
Look at
Filter to a specific season's collection. Anything with Inventory Value > $0 after the season closed is candidate for action.
Decision
Bundle, mark down, donate, or carry to next year - but make the call with data.
04

4. Insurance, audit, and valuation prep

Situation
You need a defensible inventory valuation for insurance renewal, an audit, or a financing conversation.
Look at
Total Inventory Value across all locations on a specific date.
Decision
Export to PDF for a stamped record. Schedule monthly to maintain a valuation trail.

How to read the Inventory Sale Value Report

Pareto check. If 20% of your SKUs hold 80% of the Inventory Value, your capital is concentrated. That's fine if those SKUs sell - risky if they don't.

Sale Value vs. last 90-day revenue. A ratio above 3-4× often signals overstock; below 1× signals understock risk.

Status filter. Are Draft or Archived products holding inventory? That's stock you're not even selling.

Collection imbalance. A collection with high Inventory Value but low sales velocity is your next discount candidate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Inventory Sale Value Report?

It's a Shopify report that shows the retail-price value of your current inventory. Calculated as Inventory Quantity × Product Price, it tells you how much revenue is sitting in your warehouse if every unit sold at full price.

How is Inventory Sale Value different from Inventory Cost?

Sale Value uses selling price; Cost uses unit cost. Sale Value answers "what could this be worth?" Cost answers "what did this cost us?" Run both for a complete margin picture.

Does this report use the current price or compare-at price?

It uses the current Product Price as set in Shopify. If a product is on sale, the report reflects the sale price, not the compare-at.
