What this report is
The Commission Report is a Shopify report that calculates sales commission for staff, vendors, or affiliates — attributing orders to a seller and applying your commission rate to produce the amount owed. Shopify has no native commission report; Report Pundit builds it with calculated fields, scheduling, and exports to Google Sheets, Excel, CSV, or PDF.

Why this report matters

Commission is one of the most error-prone numbers a store calculates, and Shopify gives you nothing for it. Managers export sales, attribute them by hand, apply a rate in a spreadsheet, and hope no one was missed before payday.

That manual process breaks the moment rates vary — a different percentage by product, a tier above a threshold, a separate affiliate rate. One wrong formula and someone’s paycheck is wrong, which is exactly the kind of error that erodes trust on a sales floor.

A commission report attributes each sale to a seller and applies your rules automatically, so payout is a report you run, not a spreadsheet you rebuild. Because it’s driven by calculated fields, it flexes to whatever your commission scheme actually is.

What’s included

Never just a list of column names. Every column gets a plain definition, plus a formula, a worked example, or a heads-up wherever it earns one.

Seller (staff / vendor / affiliate)

Who the sale is credited to — a POS staff member, a vendor, or an affiliate code.

Heads up:  Attribution depends on clean data: staff sign-ins at POS, the vendor field, or an affiliate/discount code. Shared logins or blank fields break the credit.

Order & date

The order the commission is calculated on and its date, for the payout period.

Sales basis

Commissionable sales

The sales figure commission is calculated on — your choice of gross, net, or net of refunds.

Formula:  Commissionable = Net sales (or your defined basis)

Heads up:  Decide up front whether commission is paid on gross or net, and whether refunds claw back — it materially changes the payout.

Units

Quantity sold by the seller, for per-unit commission schemes.

Commission

Commission rate

The percentage (or tier) applied — fixed, per-product, or threshold-based.

Example:  8% on net sales; 10% above a $10k monthly threshold.

Commission amount

The calculated payout owed to the seller.

Formula:  Commission = Commissionable sales × Rate (per tier)

Example:  $12,500 net × 8% = $1,000 commission.

How to read the report

  • Confirm the basis first. Gross vs net vs net-of-refunds changes every number below it; agree the basis before reading the payout.
  • Check attribution coverage. Unattributed sales mean missed credit; if a chunk has no seller, fix sign-ins or the source field before paying.
  • Read tiers at the boundary. Sellers near a threshold are the ones to sanity-check — a few dollars can flip them into a higher rate.
  • Treat refunds deliberately. If refunds claw back commission, a late return can reduce a payout after it was earned; make the rule explicit.

How to build the report in Report Pundit

Under 5 minutes from install to insight. No code, no SQL.
  1. Open Report Pundit in your Shopify admin and choose Create Report (or the pre-built “Commission Report” template).
  2. Set the data source to Sales / Orders and confirm how sellers are attributed (staff, vendor, or affiliate/discount code).
  3. Group the report by Seller.
  4. Add columns: Orders, Units, and your Commissionable sales basis (gross, net, or net of refunds).
  5. Add a calculated Commission rate field — fixed, per-product, or tiered with a threshold condition.
  6. Add a calculated Commission amount column (commissionable × rate).
  7. Set the date range to your payout period and decide whether refunds claw back commission.
  8. Run, reconcile one seller’s commission by hand once to validate the formula, and Save.
  9. Schedule it to run at the close of each payout cycle and deliver to finance and managers.

Customization & filters

The pre-built version covers 90% of merchant needs. For the remaining 10%, common customizations:
  • Set fixed, per-product, or tiered/threshold commission rates.
  • Choose the basis: gross, net, or net of refunds.
  • Attribute by staff, vendor, or affiliate/discount code.
  • Add a clawback rule so refunds reduce commission.
  • Group by seller then product to show what each sale was on.

Automate & export

Once the report is set up the way you want it, automation does the rest:
  • Schedules — hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, or custom cron
  • Delivery formats — Excel, CSV, PDF, or push to Google Sheets in real time
  • Group by month or week — trends instead of a static snapshot
  • Destinations — email (multiple recipients), Google Sheets, Google Drive, FTP/SFTP, Looker Studio, BigQuery
  • Conditional alerts — get notified only if a channel's net sales drop more than X% week-over-week

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Shopify have a commission report?

No. Shopify has no native commission report, so most stores calculate it by hand in a spreadsheet. Report Pundit builds it with calculated fields that apply your own rules automatically.

Can it handle tiered or per-product rates?

Yes. Commission can be a flat percentage, vary by product, or step up past a threshold — the calculated rate field models whatever scheme you run.

Who can I attribute sales to?

Staff (via POS sign-in), vendors (via the product vendor field), or affiliates (via a discount/affiliate code). Attribution is only as clean as that underlying data.
