Sales by POS

The Shopify Sales by POS report breaks down in-store sales by point of sale location, showing net units sold and total sales for each retail store.

What Is the Sales by POS Report?

The Sales by POS report tracks in-store sales performance across your point of sale locations. It is filtered to the Point of Sale sales channel, so it only counts orders placed through Shopify POS, and for each location it shows the net units sold and the total sales value.

It answers one question cleanly: which physical store performed, and by how much. Because Net Quantity already deducts in-store returns, each location's figures reflect what actually stayed sold. If you sell online only, the report stays empty, since there are no Point of Sale orders to group.

Which Fields Are Included in the Sales by POS Report?

The pre-made report uses three columns, so each location reads at a glance.

Field What it shows
POS Location Name The physical retail location where the in-person sale was rung up. In Shopify, a location is a place you stock and sell from, and POS assigns each sale to one.
Net Quantity The number of items sold at that location minus the number returned, so the count reflects net units, not gross.
Total Sales The location's total sales value, calculated as gross sales minus discounts and returns, plus taxes and shipping.

You can customize the report by adding columns such as gross sales, discounts, or a date grouping, so the view matches how you review each store.

Important Insights You Can Find in This Report

Which location is doing the volume, and which is doing the value?

The store that moves the most units is not always the store that brings in the most money. Compare the Net Quantity leader against the Total Sales leader. When they are different locations, one is running on cheap volume and the other on higher-value baskets, which changes how you stock and staff each.

Is a location's net quantity being pulled down by returns?

Net Quantity nets out returns, so a store with soft unit numbers relative to its traffic may have a returns problem at the counter rather than weak demand. Add a gross quantity column and compare: a wide gap between gross and net at one location is worth investigating.

Which location's share of total sales is slipping over time?

Run the report across consecutive periods and watch each store's contribution to the total. A single location quietly shrinking as a share of the whole is easy to miss while the overall number still looks fine. Catching that drift early lets you act before it becomes a full quarter of decline.

THE ANALYST'S READ: The Signal Most Merchants Miss

Because this report only counts Point of Sale orders, a surprisingly weak location is worth checking before you judge it. If a sale is rung through the wrong channel, or a shared register is not assigned to the right location, that revenue drops out of the store's row. Confirm the location and channel assignment first, then read the performance.

How Can You Automate the Sales by POS Report?

Open Report Pundit and select the pre-made Sales by POS report. The columns are already set, so you save it as is. To build your own, add the three fields in Custom Reports, set the Point of Sale filter and a date range, then save.

From there you can schedule it daily, weekly, or monthly so you never rebuild it by hand. Delivery options include email to your team, Google Sheets, and Google Drive, and any run exports to Excel, CSV, or PDF.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Shopify POS to use this report?

Yes. The report is filtered to the Point of Sale channel, so it only populates from orders processed through Shopify POS.

What is the difference between Sales by POS and Sales by Staff?

Sales by POS groups performance by physical location, so it answers which store sold. Sales by Staff groups the same in-store activity by the staff member credited with the sale.

Does the report include online sales?

No. It excludes online orders by design so you see clean in-store figures per location. To compare retail against online, use the Sales by Channel report.

What does Net Quantity mean in this report?

It is the number of units sold at a location minus the number returned, so it reflects net units rather than order count or gross quantity.

Can I schedule the report to send automatically?

Yes. You can schedule it daily, weekly, or monthly and have it delivered by email, Google Sheets, or Google Drive.
