What Is the Sales by Collections Report?

The Sales by Collections report shows sales performance for each smart collection in your Shopify store, one collection per row. Smart collections are the groups Shopify fills automatically using selection conditions, so a product joins when it matches a rule like tag, vendor, product type, or price, and leaves when it stops matching.

For each collection it shows order count, net quantity sold, and total sales. Shopify's own analytics do not give a clean sales-by-collection view, so this report fills that gap and tells you which automated groups are actually earning.

Merchants use it to spot which collections drive the most sales and which ones get storefront visibility without the sales to match.

Which Fields Are Included in the Sales by Collections Report?

Four fields, enough to rank collections and tell volume apart from value.

Field What it shows
Smart Collections The name of each smart collection, as built by its Shopify selection conditions.
Order Count The number of orders that included a product from the collection during the selected period.
Net Quantity The total units sold from the collection in the period, with refunded units deducted.
Total Sales The collection's final sales figure: gross sales minus discounts and returns, plus tax, shipping, and any fees or duties.

You can customize the pre-made report by adding, removing, or rearranging fields, including any custom property or metafield you have saved in Shopify, so the columns match how you review your store.

Important Insights You Can Find in This Report

Which collections earn their storefront placement?

A smart collection can sit in your main menu or a campaign page and still post weak Total Sales. Compare each collection's Total Sales against how prominently you feature it. A well-placed collection with low sales usually points to its rule, its price point, or its product mix, not your traffic, and is worth opening to check what the rule is pulling in.

Is a collection moving volume or moving value?

Read Net Quantity next to Total Sales. A collection with high units but low sales is carrying cheap or heavily discounted items, while one with few units but high sales leans on higher-ticket products. Knowing which is which tells you where to protect margin and which groups deserve more room.

Are sales spread across orders or concentrated in a few?

Compare Order Count against Net Quantity. When units far outrun orders, shoppers are buying that collection in multi-item baskets, which is a signal to keep it stocked and bundle around it. When the two are close, most orders take a single item, so the collection depends on order volume to grow.

THE ANALYST'S READ

A product can match the rules of several smart collections at once, so its sales appear under each one it belongs to. That means you cannot add Total Sales across collections and expect it to match your store total, since overlapping collections count the same orders more than once. Read each collection on its own line, and treat any sum as a ceiling rather than a true total.

How Can You Automate the Sales by Collections Report?

Open the pre-made report in Report Pundit and save it as is, or adjust the fields and filters first. Set a date range or filter to a single collection, then schedule it to email daily, weekly, or monthly so it stays current. You can also export it to Excel, CSV, or PDF, or send it to Google Sheets or Google Drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Sales by Collections report show?

It shows each smart collection on its own row with its order count, net quantity sold, and total sales for the period you select.

What does Net Quantity mean in this report?

It is the number of units sold from the collection with refunded units removed, so returns are already accounted for rather than inflating the count.

Why would a collection have high visibility but low total sales?

Usually the rule behind it, its pricing, or its product mix. A collection featured in navigation that still posts weak sales is a signal to review its selection conditions and what products they surface.

Can the same product's sales appear in more than one collection?

Yes. If a product matches the rules of several smart collections, its sales show under each of them, which is why collection totals can overlap and should not be summed into one store-wide figure.

Can I filter the report to a single collection or a specific date range?

Yes. Set any date range and apply a filter, such as limiting the report to one collection, before you save or schedule it.

Can I schedule this report to run automatically?

Yes. It can be emailed daily, weekly, or monthly, or sent to Google Sheets or Google Drive on a recurring schedule.
