The Shopify Sales by Billing Location report groups your orders by the billing address on each transaction, showing revenue, taxes, refunds, and order counts by billing country and billing province. It's the native Shopify report most merchants reach for when they want to understand where their customers are located from a payment and customer geography perspective. It's not the same as a report grouped by shipping address or tax region, which answer different business questions.

Billing Location vs. Shipping Location: Which Report Do You Need?

This is the most important distinction to understand before building or exporting any regional report. Many merchants use the two interchangeably and end up with data that doesn't match their actual question.

If you want to know... Use this report
Where customers are located (billing address) Sales by Billing Location
Where products are being delivered Sales by Shipping State/Province
Where tax was applied Tax Region Report (Finance > Taxes)
Customer payment geography for finance reconciliation Sales by Billing Location
Demand by delivery region for inventory or fulfillment Sales by Shipping State/Province

A customer who lives in Ontario and has their card registered to a home address in Ontario, but ships an order to a business address in British Columbia, will show up in Ontario in the billing location report and in British Columbia in the shipping report. Same order. Different reports. Both accurate.

The shipping location report tracks where the product is physically going. That makes it the right tool for fulfillment planning, delivery cost analysis, and understanding regional demand by destination. If most of your orders ship to a handful of provinces or states, the shipping report will surface that concentration in a way the billing report won't.

If you're doing customer geography analysis, financial reconciliation, or reviewing where your buyers are associated from a billing perspective, the billing location report is the right tool.

Where to Find the Billing Location Report in Shopify

The quickest path is: Analytics > Reports > Sales > Total Sales by Billing Location. This gives you the prebuilt report with billing country and region out of the box.

You can also build it from scratch using Shopify's report explorer. Go to Analytics > Reports, then select New exploration. From there, choose your metrics (such as net sales, order count, or gross sales) and set the dimension to Billing region or Billing country. This lets you customise the fields you see and save the view for future use.

Why Use the Sales by Billing Location Report?

Billing location is most useful when the question is about your customer base, not about logistics.

Financial reconciliation: Billing region aligns more closely with payment processing records than shipping region does. When reconciling sales data against payment gateway reports or accounting records, billing location is often the cleaner reference point.

Beyond the basics, here is what the report helps you understand

• Local Preferences: Buying habits differ by region, and tailoring your product offerings to match local demand can boost sales. With this report, you can identify regional bestsellers and focus on meeting specific market needs.

• High-sales Periods by State or Country: This helps in understanding when sales increase or decrease in each location, ensuring you have the right inventory at the right time. You can filter by date range, product category, discount code usage, payment methods, and more.

• Domestic and International Awareness: The Sales by Billing Location report is what you need to boost your business awareness across domestic and international borders.

Common Questions About the Billing Location Report

Why doesn't my billing location data match my tax report?

They use different location logic. The billing location report uses the billing address. Shopify's tax reports use the destination address (shipping first, billing as fallback, then POS). For the same order, these can point to different regions, which is why the totals don't always match. Use the Finance > Taxes report or the United States Sales Tax report for tax review.

Can Report Pundit show billing location data across multiple Shopify stores?
