Shopify records when an order was cancelled and why, but the exported orders file shows only the cancel date, not the reason. This page explains what Shopify gives you and how Report Pundit puts the cancel date and reason side by side in one report. You can then spot patterns like slow shipping, stock gaps, or payment problems.
Official answer
Yes. Shopify’s order export includes a “Canceled at” column with the date and time each order was canceled, but no cancel reason column. Report Pundit puts the cancel date and the cancel reason, such as customer request, declined payment, fraud, or inventory shortage, side by side in one report.
What Shopify gives you
Every cancellation in the Shopify admin requires a reason from the “Reason for cancellation” drop-down. Shopify stores that reason on the order, and the options are:
- customer changed or cancelled their mind
- payment declined
- fraudulent order
- insufficient inventory
- staff error
- other
The exported orders file includes the cancel date and time, but the Help Center does not list a reason column in it. Getting both onto one sheet otherwise means digging into orders one at a time.
The reason is picked by whoever cancels the order. A “customer” reason means the store recorded it that way, so it is only as accurate as the team’s habit of choosing it.
What Report Pundit adds
Report Pundit builds a cancelled orders report with the cancel date, cancel reason, customer name, order number, order value, and refund status in one table. A date range filter shows how cancellations change over time. The report can be emailed on a daily, weekly, or monthly schedule, and exported to Excel or CSV or sent to Google Sheets.
Why it is worth tracking
Cancellation reasons turn into fixes. A rise in customer cancellations can point to slow shipping, pricing, or checkout problems. Repeated inventory cancellations suggest gaps in stock management. Declined payments and fraud cancellations show where revenue is leaking before it ever ships.
