The question is how to get HS code (customs tariff code) and country of origin into a Shopify product report. Shopify stores both on the variant’s inventory item and lets you edit them on the product page, in Bulk edit, or through a customs CSV, but its analytics reports have no field for them. Report Pundit syncs both, so they can be added as columns in any product report. Custom Properties is only needed if the store keeps customs data in a metafield.
Official answer
Shopify saves the HS code and country of origin on each product variant, but its built-in analytics reports have no field for either one. A reporting app that syncs them can add both as columns through Add Columns, and the report can then be saved, exported, or scheduled.
Where Shopify keeps these values
Both values live on the variant’s inventory item. Shopify’s developer docs list them as the harmonized system code (a 6 to 13 digit number) and the country code of origin (a two-letter ISO country code).
In the admin, open Products, click a product, and check that the Shipping section has “Physical product” turned on. Then set Country of origin and Harmonized System (HS) code. For country-specific codes, use Add HS codes by country/region. A default country of origin can be set under Settings → Taxes and duties → Customs information, and it applies only to products that have no country of origin of their own.
What Shopify lets you see natively
- Bulk edit: Select products, click Bulk edit, then Columns. Under Shipping, choose Harmonized system code and Country of origin. This works well for a small number of products.
- CSV file: Go to Settings → Taxes and duties → Duties and import taxes → Manage. Under Product information, use Update with CSV. The file holds Product Handle, Product title, Variant SKU, option values, Country of origin, and HS code.
Both options are meant for checking and editing codes. Neither gives a report. The CSV is a manual file with no sales, filters, or schedule, and Bulk edit is a screen you edit on, not something you can save or send.
Why Shopify reports cannot show them
Shopify’s analytics reports and ShopifyQL schemas (sales, inventory, and the others) have no HS code or country of origin field, so the report builder has nothing to select. The standard product CSV from Products → Export does not list these two columns either. The only native view is the product page, Bulk edit, and that custom CSV.
How a reporting app fills the gap
A reporting app can read the same inventory item data through Shopify’s API. Report Pundit syncs the HS code and country of origin and keeps them up to date, so they appear in the Add Columns list like any other product field.
- Open a product report, such as the pre-made All Product report, or start a new custom report.
- Click Add Columns and search for HS code or Country of Origin.
- Add the fields, then save the report.
Once saved, the report can carry those columns into exports, Google Sheets, or a scheduled email. That helps when a customs broker or accountant needs the same list every month.
If a store keeps customs details in its own product or variant metafield instead, use Custom Properties. Choose Metafields, pick the Product or Variant sub-category, select the key, name the column, and save. Some metafield keys need a sync before they show up in the list.
