How can I find duplicate products in Shopify?

QUICK ANSWER

A merchant wants to know how to spot duplicate products in their Shopify catalog. Shopify’s admin has no built-in duplicate finder, so the workable method is to export the full product list and sort it by title and by SKU so repeats sit side by side. Report Pundit’s All Product report puts that sortable view in one place.

Official answer

Shopify has no built-in duplicate product finder. To find duplicates, export the product list, then sort it by product title and by SKU so repeated names or repeated SKUs sit next to each other. Report Pundit’s All Product report does this in one sortable view, including draft and archived products.

What Shopify offers on its own

The Shopify admin product list can be sorted by product title (A-Z or Z-A) and filtered by status (active, draft, or archived). Shopify’s Help Center does not list SKU as a sort option in the product list. Search matches words in titles, descriptions, and tags.

Shopify also lets you export products to CSV. You can export the current page, all products, selected products, or only the products that match your search and filters. The file includes the Variant SKU and Variant Barcode columns, so it can be opened in a spreadsheet and sorted there. Large exports are emailed instead of downloaded.

What to look for once the list is sorted

  • Same product title, repeated: This is the most common sign of a true duplicate.
  • Same SKU on different products: Shopify’s Help Center says each SKU needs to be unique for effective tracking and sales reporting, so a shared SKU usually points to a duplicate or a data entry mistake.
  • Same barcode on different products: This is another quick check for listings that describe the same item.

Each variant sits on its own row, so compare Product Title, Variant Title, and SKU together. Two rows with the same title but a different vendor, option, or price may be separate products, not duplicates.

Where Report Pundit fits in

The All Product report brings Product Title, Variant Title, SKU, Product Status, Vendor, Barcode, Handle, Option 1 to 3, Price, and Inventory Quantity into a single view. Sorting it by Product Title and then by SKU puts repeated listings next to each other. The Product Status column shows draft and archived products next to active ones, so an old duplicate that is no longer on the storefront still gets caught. Vendor, Barcode, and Handle help tell a real duplicate apart from a similar-looking product.
