Shopify lets a variant keep selling after stock hits zero, but it has no report for what sold in that state. This entry covers what Shopify’s inventory reports do show, and how a custom report lists products with the setting on and their units sold.
Official answer
No. Shopify has no built-in report that shows sales made while a variant was out of stock with Continue selling when out of stock turned on. Its inventory reports can show negative quantities, but none identifies the setting or those sales. A custom report can fill the gap.
Context
The setting works per variant and only when Track quantity is on. Shopify considers an item out of stock when tracked inventory is at zero or below, and Continue selling lets customers keep buying at that point. Each extra order pushes the quantity further below zero, so a negative number reflects units sold beyond available stock.
Shopify’s closest native view is its inventory reports. The Month-end inventory snapshot can show a negative ending quantity when a product was oversold. That is a quantity figure only. It doesn’t list which products have the setting on or how many units sold while they were at zero. The sell-through calculation also ignores negative inventory quantities. One more edge case: the setting doesn’t apply to Shopify POS, where staff can sell at zero and below regardless. POS sales at zero stock therefore happen independently of this setting.
Report Pundit covers the gap with a custom report. It lists all active products with their Continue selling when out of stock setting and the units sold across a date range of your choice. Filtering to products with the setting enabled shows which of them are actually moving. Adding Inventory Quantity shows which are at zero or negative right now. Units sold covers the whole selected range, so shortening the range to the window since the last restock gives a closer read on demand during stock-outs. This helps with spotting products that need replenishment and with inventory planning. The Report Pundit support team sets this report up free of charge, usually in about a minute.
